At Streetopia, the magic of the AfrikaBurn creative community spills out onto the streets of Observatory, Cape Town, bringing together artists, nonprofit organisations, residents and local businesses for a whole day of Mutant Vehicles, performances, artworks, gifting, music and much, much more.
After COVID-19 restricted Streetopia from taking place for a few years, we are pleased to announce that Streetopia is coming back with a bang later this year on the 25th of November.
Streetopia is a free, community-run event sparked by AfrikaBurn and created in conjunction with local artists, organisations and businesses, residents, and the Observatory Improvement District (OBSID). It has been a City of Cape Town Special Event since 2016, and aims to promote a safer street culture for everyone, using creativity.
What to expect at Streetopia?
We don’t know yet! because Streetopia is an open-ended invitation for anyone to come along and add their colour and creativity to the event. From previous Streetopia events, we expect a range of entertainment, including unique and spontaneous live performances as well as happenings, stalls, shops, music, dancing and art installations.
Streetopia is completely free – and everyone’s invited. As a non-profit event, the point of it all is to give back to the neighbourhood that’s played such a crucial role in fostering many projects and collaborations that have gone on to come alive in Tankwa Town.
As with any AfrikaBurn event, the spirit of volunteering is what drives the whole thing – and anyone’s welcome to step up and assist us in pulling off another successful day on the streets by signing up for a range of tasks – from planning and set up, to volunteering a shift on the day. Thanks to financial support from the City of Cape Town and the National Arts Council, we have a bigger canvas than ever to dream up and create Streetopia this year. We look forward to seeing you all there.
