In our recent Annual General Meeting, several new Members were voted in. Afrika Burns Creative Projects is governed by community members just like you who’ve stepped up and decided to champion the organisation that they feel strongly about … We’d therefore like to introduce you to the new Members of AfrikaBurn … there’s a high chance you’ve seen them in Tankwa Town before.

Gülden Aktugan, who is originally from Istanbul, Turkey. Gülden’s first AfrikaBurn was in 2017 and her first time volunteering too. Since 2018 Gülden has been the Greeters Lead, looking after the Virgin Bell, with her volunteer team helping to create those unforgettable first memories at AfrikaBurn, popping virgin cherries, making participants feel welcome and comfortable while at the same time reminding them of the 11 principles during the process.

Cat Carlton, has also been a Burner since 2017, Cat served as a Ranger at AfrikaBurn for two years, as well as at Burning Man for three years. Cat is also a former mayor of Menlo Park, California; she wrote state laws to fight child human trafficking and helped found and run non-profit impact and technology companies on three continents. Cat is also a doctoral candidate in Leadership and Trust at Vanderbilt University.

Maloba Kgomo ‘Lebo – Bubblykween’  … the girl with many names. Lebo has been involved with AfrikaBurn for just two years, having joined AfrikaBurn through the Anathi program in 2023. Maloba later joined the Ops team through an internship program, working as an Archivist looking after our organisation’s history … and the rest is history. Lebo has had the joy of working with Volunteer portfolio, joining Memsec as an admin assistant and is also one of the Two Blunt Girls who host the morning show on Radio Free Tankwa.

Cara Morris (aka Princess Caralot) loves cats and recreationally wrangles spreadsheets. She is hugely passionate and knowledgeable about the AfrikaBurn community, and is a connector of people and networker of information.

Cate Turner was raised feral on a farm in the far eastern reaches of the Karoo basin, and Cate is passionate about flora, fauna and building food security and agency in small rural communities through creative projects.

Bella West has done a tour of duty within the ranks of the Department of Public Works, volunteers at Sanctuary, and worked at the Supplier Depot. They have an invisible disability that rarely stops them from burning, and they have brought an artwork to the burn in the past.
