Last Minute Info

This is it – we’re down to mere days before everything unfolds in the Tankwa!

In order to get everything set up for your arrival, most of our crew are already away, busily preparing the many infrastructure elements of Tankwa Town for your arrival. Those that aren’t already there will be, soon. This means

FROM FRIDAY 25th APRIL, ALL CREW WILL BE ON SITE UNTIL MAY 5/6th

And that includes our Communications team who respond to Facebook queries and emails sent to [email protected]. So, in the interests of ensuring you get the info you need when you need it most – round about now – check out the info below, which should answer any questions you might have at this late stage.

Know anyone asking questions and desperate for answers? Now’s when Each One Teach One comes into full effect – if you have the info, share the love!

TICKETS
First things first – DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT YOUR TICKET!
Our tickets sold out on February 2nd this year – and there are no ticket sales at the event gate (other than for kids up to the age of 14).  However, resold tickets are still in circulation: take a look under ‘Posts To Page’ on the right right hand column of our main Facebook page, and the 2014 event page, if you want to buy or sell tickets. Please only sell tickets at face value – as Burners we don’t profit off each other.
– You’re still able to sell or buy tickets directly, up until the event
– A copy of the original ticket purchaser’s ID (or passport) needs to be provided to the buyer/s, so it can be presented to our gate crew on arrival along with the ticket, so they can verify the sale
Tickets in STEP that were not sold have been placed back into the owner’s Quicket account and can be sold, as above.
If you’re having any difficulties with Quicket, shoot them a mail on [email protected] or call them on +27 21 424 9308.

EARLY ARRIVALS
Only essential setup crew working on Art and Theme Camp projects have been provided with Early Arrivals Passes, which enable them to access the event before Monday when gates open. The cutoff for EA Passes was April 21st, so these are not able to be provided at this point. Sitting on the road outside the event is no way to start your burn, so if you don’t have an EA Pass, please don’t arrive any earlier than April 28th, as our gate crew will have to politely refuse you entry.

EMERGENCY CONTACT

With an MTN phone, around 12ish (the location of the Clan), you can sometimes get a signal – it’s not good enough for calls, but it does work for text messages. The higher your position, the better – around Subterrafuge, you should be able to get better signal (and even possibly make a call on other networks).
If you have a very real concern about being to contact your family or loved ones whilst at AfrikaBurn, we suggest that you get a satellite phone for your own purposes.
In the event that your family or friends have a critical situation that requires contacting someone at the event, ask them to email [email protected] – but by virtue of the large scale of our event, it’s very difficult to find people on the ground, so we can’t guarantee that your mail will be responded to quickly, but it will be responded to.

VOLUNTEER?

Want to volunteer? Excellent! Come to Off-Centre Camp at 6-ish Street and Binnekring road and offer yourself up at Volunteer Booth, you will be showered with love and gratitude.

MEDIA

If you are filming or taking photos professionally or for a media title, please visit the Media Booth at Off-Center Camp at 6-ish Street and Binnekring Road to get media-orientated and sign a media accreditation agreement. This does not apply to personal use of cameras.

FLYING IN, OR USING A DRONE OR RC AIRCRAFT?

Please note that unless the pilot of a plane has registered themself with our Airspace crew and obtained an allocation number and the info pack – and has a ticket – they are not permitted  to land.
Drone operators – If you plan on operating a drone recreationally or to shoot footage from, you need to register your drone with our UAV team. Harry from the UAV team will be at Off-Centre Camp at 11am each day to advise drone operators on fly zones, do inspections and assist with registrations.

ROAD CONDITIONS

If you’ve travelled it before, you’d know that the R355 – whether you come via Calvinia in the north or Ceres in the south – eats tyres for breakfast, lunch and supper. We strongly suggest that before you hit the road you pack two spare tyres – even if you’re driving a 3 000-litre 4 x 4 armed with Desert Eagle Road Muncher tyres. The fact is, an overloaded vehicle’s tyre sidewalls are more exposed to the sharp stones that lie in wait, and thus stand a greater chance of blowouts and punctures. Pack wisely – centre your load if at all possible – and please, whatever you do, even if you’re a day late –
DO NOT DRIVE FAST ON THE R355 – KEEP YOUR SPEED AROUND 70KM/H.
Need more info on how to get to Tankwa Town safely and in one piece? Hit the Survival Guide link above – there’s lots of good road advice in it.
One last very important driving tip: if you can’t see ahead due to dust (on the way in, or leaving) please, please, please – DO NOT OVERTAKE IF YOU CAN’T SEE AHEAD.

RIDE SHARE

If you are looking for a lift, or offering one, we suggest posting on the Tankwa Ride & Share group.

BRINGING ART THAT HASN’T BEEN REGISTERED?

No problem – arrive, check in at Off-Centre Camp (OCC) and ask for the Art Crew. They’ll sort you out with a spot.

MEDIA – FILM CREWS – PHOTOGRAPHERS – JOURNOS

When you arrive, you’ll need to be tagged and released. Whether you’ve registered for accreditation or not, please head to Off-Centre Camp (OCC) and check in at the Media Booth, thanks.
