Comms Coordinator
Known for his charmingly awkward and quirky soul. You can find him wandering in the abyss of his mind, but you’re more likely to find him in your emails. He is very reserved and loves to keep his thoughts to himself. Anyways, that’s enough of Fazel.
*inserts deep soul-searching question*
Department of Mutant Vehicles, Technology
DMV wrangler and grant admin in the streets, IT extraordinaire in the sheets.
Bash loves working with data, vehicles, beer, spreadsheets and creating governing processes in Membership. Bash also loves driving works of art from concept, to design stage, to logistics to build.
My mind is vrot and I cant think lekker.
Office Manager, Event Operations Team Manager
Nokubonga is responsible for the day to day smooth functioning of the AfrikaBurn Headquarters and is also responsible for Operations Team support at the event. In one of her previous AfrikaBurn lives Bongi was part of the lost and found and now helps to make sure that nothing or no-one ever gets lost at AfrikaBurn.
Nokubonga knows EVERYTHING.
Executive Director of Operations
Dane is a chameleon born out of the dust and has arrived adorning the new hat of operational responsibility. Dane is at AfrikaBurn to make a plan and get shit done. The fire builder; starter and extinguisher all in one.
Counting down the days until he spontaneously combusts and oh, what a Burn that will be.
Quagga Farm Manager, Tankwa Ninja
Horse whisperer, builder, permaculturist, mechanic, welder, plumber, father and all round ninja and tracker.
Best eyes in the Tankwa.
Art and Performance Lead
[ˈi.zɐ ˈmaɾ.kɨʃ] Read ‘Isa’ as in ‘She is a’ good friend; and if you have a creative project she’s YOUR best friend. Isa studied how to read epic literature in ancient Greek, but ended up knowing how to create epic art in the harsh Karoo. Isa also has a vast array of very talented friends that she keeps around to help with your creative projects. That’s mainly why we like her.
No Issa, no Aiza, no voice notes.
Head of Kitchen, Department of Public Works Human Resources Lead (bonus: aspiring DJ)
Jemma’s love for cooking and people combine perfectly in her two roles. A trained chef, and DPW die-hard, she loves hard work, isn’t afraid to tell you what’s what, and can often be found playing banging tunes of some sort for groups of people.
Don’t forget to wash your dishes.
Box Office And Ticketing Lead
Patsy drank the Cool-Aid a number of years ago and now we can’t get rid of her. As a long time volunteer, she is a self proclaimed Bitch in Charge.
She recently took over the Box Office and Ticketing portfolio and like her predecessor, she likes shit to be in order. So read the information on your ticket, arrive at the gate prepared and she will shower you with love. Arrive unprepared at your own risk.
She can be soothed by Gin and Tonic.
Creative Coordinator
Art Coordination? Chasing, Herding, Reminding. Recording, Compiling, Cheering, Burning, Crying, Fixing, Teaching and Learning. All for the love of Art and Organised Chaos.
Viqueen born in snow, settled in sun.
Operations Manager
Kristy is the driving force behind the entire operations team, making sure that all the different AfrikaBurn departments are working together in a semi-functional way. Kristy is the only person you ever want to call in a crisis – especially if that crisis happens in Tankwa Town and involves sunburn.
Failing that your only option is Ghostbusters or maybe your local skydiving club.
Theme Camp Coordinator
She’s not a regular cat mom, she’s a cool cat mom, and all the Theme Camps are her cats.
You will probably hear her before you see her.
Executive Director of Development
With a superpower of invisibility (and a very important title), you’ll probably only get to meet Lorraine if something’s gone seriously well or seriously awry. Count yourself lucky you don’t know her … and very, very lucky if you do. She’s also the world’s worst DJ with the world’s best record collection, the latter being the only very reason we keep her around.
No music requests allowed.
Tankwa Outreach Ambassador, Department of Mutant Vehicles
Robert is one of the OG (Original Grandma) founders of AfrikaBurn and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the AfrikaBurn Outreach projects and all things DMV. With the support of the petrol-swilling DMV crew Robert can often be found on top of, or underneath a mutant vehicle in Tankwa Town.
Robert also has greasy fingers in lots of AfrikaBurn committees and teams and can often be found dress shopping in upmarket Cape Town boutiques.
Healthcare Coordinator
Reered in chaos and built with calm, Cayla (AKA Dr Chaos) weaves her way through all things health and healing to keep us all safe. As an emergency doctor with training in alternative healing modalities, she is the perfect match for the AfrikaBurn Healthcare Coordinator.
When shit hits the fan, she’ll make a plan, and when the dust dissipates, she’ll leave us feeling great.
Communications Lead, Client Liaison
Brian is responsible for all things communications. When he’s not reading filthy bedtime stories on Radio Free Tankwa, he’s busy filling the AfrikaBurn website with inconsistencies, writing last minute newsletters or cobbling together AfrikaBurn infographics, posters, books, maps, t-shirts, stickers, etc.
His nickname is just an ironic spelli g mistake.
Community Communications Officer & Retired CIA Lead
Tim Doyle is an American television producer and television writer. His credits include Dinosaurs, Roseanne, Grace Under Fire, Ellen, Sports Night, Still Standing, The Big Bang Theory, Better Off Ted, Rules of Engagement, Last Man Standing, and creator of The Kids Are Alright.
Doyle grew up in Glendale, California. He is married to Ellen Svaco. They have one child together.
Airspace Lead AKA Chief Lemon Squeezer
Jacqui is the volunteer responsible for the operations of airstrip. If you are lucky, you may glimpse her flying around semi naked on her broomstick year round between the moonlight and shadows. When summoned to the sunshine she wrangles volunteers, herds sparkle ponies, handling legalese and paperwork, lighting and securing airstrip, registering charter organisations, dodging propellers, publishing updates, collecting airport taxes, confiscating drones, chatting up pilots, helicopters, falling sausages, passengers and most importantly getting people out in emergency situations.
She is the go to person for people, pilots and planes wanting to fly high.
Finance and Grants Coordinator
As a Finance and Grant coordinator, she is the budget juggler, grant guru and expense explorer. When not conquering spreadsheets, she indulges in culinary adventures, especially her butter chicken masterpiece, and is a mixology enthusiast. Her Rum & SloMag concoction is a sweet escape to desert paradise.
I am the worst person with words, but a ninja with numbers
DPW (Planning and Procurement) Coordinator
Considered to be an R355 expert and (an adequate) DPW translator. Rumoured to be the best Mamma in the dust (if you know, you know). Mostly spends her time keeping a (blind) eye on the antics of the DPW crew. Usually, while peering over a laptop or a book (or a beer).
Toot Toot!
Lead Tankwa Ranger Council
Sandworm is responsible for the Ranger portfolio that attracts around 350 Burner volunteers at each event, caring for their community, and embodying the 11 Principles to nurture the manifestation of unity in Tankwa and keep the Burns safe. Rangers become Oracles providing information on the dust, wind and fire and where to find the best pancakes. Sandworm remains camouflaged in bright orange from head to toe, usually found next to something orange; a container or a flashing orange light.
Superpower is reuniting lost souls
Net Positive Coordinator
A calm and happy-go-lucky individual, with a deep passion for our planet and its environment. Kharan has his classical training as a Biotechnologist, with a focus on large scale waste reduction and the development of new sustainable technologies. With his not-so-classical training coming from DPW and months of living in Tankwa building our dear city. Equally at home in a dust bowl, behind a data set or in a lab developing new research. You will see him scuttling around the desert, engaging the community around net positive initiatives, scouring the dust for shiny objects as well as developing the sacred MOOP map. Outside of the event, his role is to bring new sustainment projects into our dusty town and help enable AfrikaBurn as a whole to move forward in a positive and sustainable way.
His hidden superpower is the ability to turn waste streams into positive systems and not having a sense of smell.
Want some hot chocolate?
Asset, Fleet and Yard Coordinator
Marcos is a Jack of all trades and a master of fun. Marcos dabbled in the mysterious arts of DPW and Leave No Trace in his early Burn years. Refining his skills over the years, he has acquired the power of knowledge through experience, with very little he can’t handle, Marcos is versatile and desert tough! Marcos has a reputation for running a tight ship with a smile on his face. He is always eager to help out where he can and is on a mission to improve, protect and maintain AfrikaBurn’s Assets, Fleet and Yard.
Marcos Sleeps, Eats and Breathes AfrikaBurn, and can be found wandering around AfrikaBurn HQ as if it was his own backyard all year round.
Other powers: Cat whispering.
Spatial Planning and DPW Ground Control
We lay down the white lines of Tankwa Town rock by rock. But a city is more than a place in space, as Patrick Geddes reminds us, it is a drama in time.
Please direct the drama and let’s build the art.
Humans and Project Coordinator
Sisipho wears many hats to keep the vibes groovy. She is your go-to calm and fun person, from helping with operational HR and coordinating the Anathi program to ensuring event logistics run like clockwork. Sisipho fosters a positive work culture, ensuring everyone feels the creative beat of AfrikaBurn. After the event curtains close, she dives into data, crafting plans for even more unforgettable experiences.
Join me on this joyous journey of creativity and community at AfrikaBurn!
Volunteer Portfolio Lead
She is your guide and gateway into all things volunteer-related. The fibre network and heart-beat of AfrikaBurn is PARTICIPATION. So that means – you need to get involved to drink from the magic that makes it all happen! She is a bit of a Shape-Shifter, as she helps you to spark ideas and forge connections, not only in Tankwa Town, but also with our wider community throughout the year. It’s one of those things – you need to jump in – to get that magic feeling that keeps you coming back for more!
Feel free to get in touch, and bite the dust, by becoming a volunteer!
Human Resources Coordinator
Supporting the humans at AfrikaBurn, Tara helps those at the heart of it all bring their magic to life. She’s here to steady the dust and uplift weary hands, making sure the people behind the scenes feel supported in the work that keeps the fire burning.
Suppliers and Gate Liaison
Once upon a time, Princess Caralot slid down a stiletto in a park and landed herself slap bang in the middle of a bunch of crazies. This discovery of her tribe resulted in her throwing herself into the dust with wild abandon. A years-long volunteer, she eventually ended up at the helm of Leave No Trace, took over the Thrones, co-led DPW, and is now, for the first time, part of the Operations core wrangling outside services and coordinating the dust outside Die Hek.
Archive Support, and you can find her and her trinkets at the Artefactory during the Burn.
She goes by many names. She brings a unique blend of cultural richness, adaptability, and a dash of humour to the HQ with her vibrant energy and enthusiastic smile. She joined the team as an archive intern and along the journey, she navigated into the Volunteer Support role, which is crucial to the seamless functioning of the HQ. Her daily tasks are dedicated to preserving memories and organising the AfrikaBurn treasure chest, filled with exciting adventures, both in the tangible and virtual realms. Here’s to preserving the trinkets and creating memorable experiences in the AfrikaBurn journey!
